Hook up the timing light over No. 1 cylinder on the engine of your Jeep TJ. (This is the cylinder over the radiator on the front of the engine closest).
Connect the cables to the timing light positive and negative terminals of the battery of the Jeep. The red wire connects to the positive terminal and the black wire connects to the negative terminal.
Turn on the engine and aim the timing light at the harmonic balancer. The timing light will tell you where your calendar is currently.
Locate the bolt 1/2 inch on the passenger side of the motor, adjacent to the dispenser. Loosen the bolt with a wrench, but do not remove it completely.
With the engine still running, turn the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on how you want the time to advance or retard. Tiny movements adjust the synchronization engine Jeep TJ.
Tips & Warnings
If you do not adjust the time before and think that your timing belt is bad, it is probably the knock sensor or cranking position sensor is bad, not the time.
If you enable the distributor too far, the engine will quit running. This is why it is so important to make only small adjustments at the time of your Jeep. If you completely remove the bolt and try to take the distributor out, it will be extremely difficult to get it right. If you have cracked the son of the spark plug, there is a change, you might get shocked. Take care to avoid injury.
